George Russell won Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton qualified only seventh due to DRS problems. However, Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin does not believe that the team underperformed in the race than it could have been because of this.
Andrew Shovlin: “We especially regret the problem with DRS on Lewis’ car in the qualifying final. It happened once when he went to try a new set of tires. If both drivers qualified on the front row we would be in a great position to control the course of the race.
Lewis struggled in the race, partly due to the starting set of tires. Max Verstappen started the race on the Soft with two sets of Medium left. This allowed him to make the first pit stop earlier and cut Lewis off more effectively. It was a defining moment, but we don’t feel like we missed an opportunity.
All in all, we need to make the car faster and make sure that the DRS problems we had in qualifying don’t happen in the future.”
