Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes team, had not expected such a successful performance during qualifying at the classic British circuit in Silverstone, just like his drivers. But this was further confirmation that the direction of modernization of the car chosen this year has proven to be the right one.
Toto Wolff: “George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix, and now at Silverstone we were on the entire front row – it sounds incredibly cool! Who would have thought this a few months ago?
Before qualifying we didn’t have much confidence in success – maybe also because we didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves, simply because something was starting to work for us. And I can say the same about the expectations that come with tomorrow’s race.
After a good third practice we were hoping that qualifying would be on a wet track. I think the weather helped us to achieve success. This is truly British weather and now we want to take it to all the remaining summer races, wherever they take place.
I am finally very happy, also because precisely because of our speed we were able to win the qualification honestly, but still we should not rejoice in advance. However, I am happy, because in the last two years the biggest problem was that we could not find the right direction for modernizing equipment, our performance was unstable, more successful weekends alternated with downright failed weekends.
But in 2024, before the Imola stage, we finally found this direction: that weekend the car worked exactly as we expected. After that, we introduced technical innovations at every stage, analyzed the behavior of the W15 and we will continue this process. There are especially high expectations for the next updates that we are preparing for Budapest and Spa.”
