George Russell won qualifying at his home circuit of Silverstone to take the third pole position of his career and his second this year.
George Russell (1st): “Indescribable emotions! At the beginning of the year we couldn’t even dream of pole position on a circuit like Silverstone!
Lewis and I drove for the first and second time, and Lando Norris was third. This is just amazing! This was also made possible by all the fans in the stands, they charge us with energy.
Our car is making a very good impression now and in qualifying it went even faster. Driving on this circuit is a real pleasure.
Mercedes is in top form now, but now we have to prepare as best as possible for tomorrow, when we have to fight for the win. Of course we will have a tough fight with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, because they will be fast too, but now I feel great joy.”
Lewis hamilton (2nd): “First of all, many thanks to the fans! And I am very proud that the top three results were achieved by British riders – an incredible achievement! Of course I congratulate George with all my heart, he did a great job.
This weekend we obviously didn’t expect to be on the front row in qualifying, and for our whole team this is a very important result. In general, everyone at Mercedes deserves this success. The driving experience was great, but the most important thing was to get the tyres at the right temperature and to choose the right moment to go out on track. I think I managed that. But I still managed to do the lap faster, because George managed it.
But for tomorrow’s race I have confidence in the car and I think we will try to join forces to counter the attacks of Lando Norris.”
