Charles Leclerc: Aggressive strategy didn’t work

Carlos Sainz finished fifth at Silverstone, earning an extra point for his fastest lap. After the finish, Carlos called the final race one of his best performances in recent years.

His teammate Charles Leclerc finished fourteenth. The Ferrari driver complained that the aggressive strategy, including an early switch to intermediate tyres, did not work.

Carlos Sainz (5th): “The best lap is a nice bonus after a good race. In fact, I drove one of my best races in recent years. We made good decisions about when to pit and were fast in the changing conditions. At one point I even fought for the podium, but finishing in the top three was impossible because we were not fast enough.

“However, I am happy and very proud of the team for making the right decisions and how we worked together. Overall, we had a perfect race, apart from the fact that the car was not fast enough. But I did everything I could.”

Charles Leclerc (14th): “We followed an aggressive strategy, which obviously didn’t work. One lap after I had changed the already worn intermediate tyres for slicks, it started to rain. And I had to go back to the pits. Sunday’s race proved to be very difficult again.

My team and I decided to change to intermediate tyres. The decision was based on my feelings and the information I received. “Unfortunately we made a mistake today and it has to be fixed because we make too many mistakes in these weather conditions.”
