Lando Norris had every chance of winning his home race at Silverstone, but for the final stretch he decided to use rolled-in soft tyres instead of the new Medium set. As a result, the McLaren driver was not only unable to challenge Lewis Hamilton for victory, but also allowed Max Verstappen to take second place.
His team-mate Oscar Piastri was also in contention for the top spot, but McLaren’s decision to pit him a lap later than his main rivals cost the Australian not only a potential victory, but also a place on the podium.
Lando Norris (3rd): “First of all congratulations to Lewis. At the end of the race a crucial decision had to be made and Lewis handled it better. Hats off to him and Mercedes.
It was tough, but I enjoyed fighting these guys. As for our team, I don’t think we did our part as well as we could have.
At the same time I blame myself. I hate to finish in this position. But I’m still happy and I enjoyed the race. I would like everything to be perfect, but today it’s not.”
Oscar Piastri (4th): “To be honest, if I get upset, it won’t help matters. Besides, it’s obvious that the team earned a lot of points today; in fact, it was McLaren who earned the most again.
My partner and I, however, believe that both he and I had a chance to win. It is a shame that we have to end the weekend a bit upset, because our car was fast in all weather conditions. We literally flew around the track when it was wet with rain, and now it is clear that I stayed on slicks for too long.
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of positions because of this, and it’s unpleasant to remember that. But actually I didn’t plan to go to the pit stop with Lando, because at that moment I didn’t even know how much time I would lose if I stayed on the track for another lap. Of course, we still have to analyse all the decisions we made then.
But it was clear that if the team had done a double pit stop, I would have lost a lot of time as well. But now it is very clear that it was necessary to act this way…”
