Max Verstappen: It could have been a lot worse

Max Verstappen finished second at Silverstone and extended his lead in the individual championship over his nearest pursuer Lando Norris to 84 points. After the race, the reigning world champion said the result could have been much worse.

His Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez finished seventeenth and scored no points.

Max Verstappen (2nd): “We had no pace today. At the beginning of the race I slowly dropped back when it was critical. At that moment our prospects didn’t look so bright. I also thought: “How am I going to finish it? Fifth? Sixth?

But then the team and I made the right strategic decisions, choosing the right moments to change from slicks to intermediate tyres and then back to slicks, and every time this transition was made on the right circle.

In the end the team suggested to put hard tyres instead of soft ones, which definitely helped me. Thanks to that I finished second. It could have been a lot worse.”

Sergio Perez (17th): “We tried to make up for this with strategy and switched to intermediate tyres earlier than everyone else in the hope that the rain would get heavier. But this didn’t happen and I had to go back to the pits because the tyres were completely unusable.

After a while I went back to the pits to get intermediate tyres when it started to rain. I was very unlucky but we tried to do something but luck was not on our side and the idea didn’t work.

Given my starting position, I was initially at a disadvantage. But we tried to do everything we could.”
