Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have won the last two races in Austria and Great Britain. After the finish of the stage at Silverstone, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff explained why the team could improve and announced further updates to the car before the summer break.
Toto Wolff: “I think you understand that five races ago we didn’t even qualify for the podium. It looked like we were having a third failed season, but suddenly everything started to work.
Suddenly, calculations that we thought were meaningless started to make sense. We are talking about the development direction that was chosen a long time ago, but only now has it worked. We installed components on the cars and this led to better lap times, which had not happened in the last two years.
At some point James Ellison discovered that the calculations of the past made sense. The most important change is how we balance the car now. So the progress cannot be attributed miraculously to the new front wing. Progress was made possible by changing the approach to balancing the car.
“We will increase the speed even more. The team is preparing updates for the Budapest and Spa stages. But we must not get too carried away. In Austria we won by taking advantage of an incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, but at Silverstone we won on our own. We had real speed and were competitive in almost all conditions.”
