Rosberg investigates the impact of spectators on the environment

2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg has decided to tackle the impact of Formula 1 fans on environmental sustainability. Working with Oxford University, Rosberg hopes to find out how fan transportation can be made more environmentally friendly and how biodiversity around the circuit can be protected.

Nico Rosberg: “This is an innovative project. Each of us must contribute to reducing the ecological footprint of our activities.

I sponsor three students at Oxford University. We used the British Grand Prix as an example of how a race weekend can be made more environmentally friendly.

Of the half million viewers, the majority travel by car. Silverstone supports our concerns. We were given access to cameras and sensors that measure air quality.”

The research combines satellite imagery with information from the circuit’s ticketing app to provide the most detailed possible picture of fan movements.

The 39-year-old German hopes to create a similar platform for other Grand Prix with his research.
