George Russell started from pole position at Silverstone and was in contention to win the race, but retired on lap 33 due to engine cooling problems. Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin said the team knew from the opening laps that George would not be able to finish.
Andrew Shovlin: “Unfortunately, we knew quite early on that we had a problem and we followed the dynamics from the first segment. There was a leak in the cooling system, which started to release pressure. We eventually stopped the car to protect the drivetrain from overheating.
We knew we couldn’t possibly finish. We didn’t want to finish and destroy the power unit and be penalized for replacement later in the season.
The team asked George to stop as a precaution, but he was unable to reach the checkered flag.”
