Zac Brown criticised former team manager

McLaren boss Zak Brown has criticised former colleague Otmar Safnaeur, who was sacked as Alpine team boss in July last year.

Zach didn’t like that Szafnauer would sometimes have the opposite opinion on the same topic during team management meetings, depending on which one of them was in the best interest of his team at the time.

Zach Brown: “Sometimes there are some pretty tricky situations in team management meetings. For example, two years ago Lando Norris accumulated too many penalty points and we tried to write off some of them because most of the infringements he got them for were not ‘dangerous’. However, Othmar was completely against the points being deducted because he wanted Lando to get a one-race suspension.

And so we fast forward twelve months, but Pierre Gasly already has too many penalty points. And Otmar is challenging the exact same proposal that we put forward. And we all say to him: “Buddy, but you voted against it yourself.” And he didn’t even remember it!

The situation is unhealthy because it shows that a decision can work in your favor one year, but against you the next. To eliminate the principle of “I vote for what is profitable today”, we need to step aside and let the FIA and Formula 1 regulate the situation in the interest of the sport.
