Fernando Alonso: Drivers used to be more sincere

Fernando Alonso is the most experienced and senior driver currently competing in Formula 1. He made his debut in the championship in 2001 in the era of Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Eddie Irvine and other equally famous drivers of the turn of the century.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Fernando compared today’s young pilots with the older generation.

Fernando Alonso: “There are definitely some differences between them. I believe the older generation was more sincere. All the racers have different characters, in their approach to work and life, but they were all very strong competitors.

I would say that the young drivers are now very talented, maybe even more talented than before, thanks to training, racing academies, sim work and technology. They have more information at their disposal to help them learn quickly and progress. Now drivers are better prepared for their debut in Formula 1.

But when they take off their racing helmets outside the track, they are all more or less the same, more shy. They have assistants who are responsible for working with the press, for management, physical training and so on. The young riders are well prepared, but perhaps because of that they lack a bit of charisma.”
