The future fate of Carlos Sainz will continue to be one of the most talked about topics, probably until he decides for himself which team he will play for in the near future.
Before the British leg of the championship, there was talk that Flavio Briatore could convince the Spaniard to return to the Renault factory team at Alpine, but in his own way, an interesting scenario was suggested by David Coulthard, who produces their joint podcast Formula for Success (“Formula for Success”) with Eddie Jordan.
According to the Scot, Sainz could remain at Ferrari as a reserve driver, and this option, while not obvious, has its own logic.
David Coulthard: “Williams confirmed that they are interested in working with him. Audi would like him to partner Nico Hulkenberg, but I think in reality it will be better for Carlos if he stays at Ferrari. He can propose to them that he is ready to be a reserve driver for the next two years, because personally I can’t imagine Lewis staying at the Scuderia for a third year.
Carlos needs to stay fit for two years, but he will be able to take a mental break from the stress of Formula 1, and then, when he turns 32, he will be able to get behind the wheel of a car that he will partner with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. And then he might even have a chance to fight for the title.
Can he claim the title within the next three years if he races for Alpine? Can he become world champion in three years with Williams? Can he do it with Audi? I would say no.”
Of course, this scenario is unlikely, but Carlos Sainz has been waiting for a decision for quite some time, and it cannot be said categorically that there are no negotiations with Ferrari behind the scenes. Maybe Coulthard knows something?
