McLaren’s programme at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is traditionally very extensive, including the participation of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
The famous Brazilian won his second title half a century ago, driving for McLaren in an M23 with a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 3.0 engine. Now a valuable historical relic in a private collection, at Goodwood Fittipaldi cruised up the fast climb to Goodwood Hill behind the wheel of his champion McLaren to enthusiastic applause from a large crowd.
“This is a huge honor for me! Just like a divine blessing! – he remarked during a break between runs. “Thank you for putting my name on this car again.” This is so great! By the way, my mother named me after the American writer and philosopher Ralph Walter Emerson.
Because my older brother was called Wilson, like my father, I couldn’t be called something like Giuseppe, so my mother decided to give me an American name too. All in all, it’s great to be back at Goodwood, the weather is beautiful today, the sun is shining and I’m driving the McLaren M23, this beautiful car that won my second world championship.
But even now McLaren is performing well and I hope this team will be champion again next year!”
