Early one morning during the race weekend at Silverstone, Valtteri Bottas was seen leaving the Williams camper van where he met with James Vowles, the British team boss.
It is clear that the Finn would rather not comment on this, but Vowles is willing to admit that he considers him as one of the possible candidates, and it is possible that Bottas could become Alex Albon’s new partner in 2025. They are of course very well known from the time when Valtteri played for Mercedes.
“I’m looking for a driver who can push Alex Albon,” James Vowles told the Racing Pilot podcast. – What’s more, this driver has to push the whole team, with the aim of achieving ever-increasing results.
Moreover, we are not only talking about speed, but also about experience. Such a driver must help the team move forward and show stable results. And this is only part of what we need now. And as the team progresses, the importance of all these factors will only increase.
When we talk about possible candidates, we have a list with several riders, which is gradually getting shorter. I want to emphasize right away: I don’t need someone who wants to drive for Williams just because we pay for it.
This person needs to understand what goals we have, what exactly we are doing to achieve them, and really wants to walk this path with us. We are now looking for such a racer.”
When Vowles was asked directly if Valtteri Bottas was on his shortlist, the Williams boss replied: “I was fortunate that Toto Wolff, when I was at Mercedes, entrusted me with working with emerging drivers, and I did that for several years, so I can say that I have considerable experience in selecting the most valuable candidates.
When talking about Valtteri, it is worth remembering that only a very fast driver can surpass Lewis Hamilton in qualifying. So everything is simple here.
And Valtteri hasn’t lost his previous speed, he’s the same as before. Now he’s driving for the team that has the slowest car, but despite that he still manages to stay ahead of the drivers of some other teams. I like it.
I also like that he stands out for qualities such as sincerity and straightforwardness. When he says something, it means that he means it. I worked with him for many years and it was a very pleasant experience, so we are certainly considering Valtteri’s candidacy, even if we do not talk about it openly.
He is not the only contender, but he is certainly one of those drivers who deserves a place in Formula 1.”
