Sunday’s IndyCar race at the Iowa oval was won by Team Penske’s Will Power, but almost as he crossed the finish line a spectacular four-car crash occurred behind him.
It all started when Sting Ray Robb, driver of the AJ Foyt Racing team, overtook Alex Rossi’s Arrow McLaren at the exit of Turn 2, which suddenly seemed to have slowed down. Unable to avoid her, Robb collided with her left rear wheel and his car went airborne, spinning several times and stopping in the middle of the track with its wheels upside down.
But that’s not all: Rossi’s Dallara, which lost control in the impact, was hit by Kyle Kirkwood, an Andretti driver, and by Ed Carpenter, who drives for his own team. The video from the IndyCar press office, starting at 1 minute and 52 seconds, shows from all angles how it happened.
Of course, doctors attended to all of his competitors after the accident, with Rossi, Kirkwood and Carpenter quickly released from the circuit’s medical centre, and Robb is reported to be conscious, and his condition generally does not cause alarm. However, he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
