The FIA’s Contract Recognition Board has approved an agreement between McLaren and Oscar Piastri for the 2023 season. Racingnews365 reports this based on sources.
According to the publication, Piastri only had a contract with Alpine for 2022 with an option for 2023, but the team did not take advantage of that in time. As a result, an agreement was signed between Piastri and McLaren on the evening of July 30 – even before Fernando Alonso’s transfer to Aston Martin was officially confirmed.
Interestingly, even before the signing of the deal with Piastri, McLaren’s lawyers turned to the FIA Council on Contracts, which confirmed that Oscar did not have a valid agreement with Alpine before 2023. Only after that did the team from Woking sign all the papers. with the young Australian rider who will replace Daniel Ricciardo.
Alpine will not challenge the FIA Council’s decision as previously all teams unanimously decided that it is the highest decision-making body on contractual matters.
Daniel Ricciardo’s future is now up for debate. The most likely option for Daniel to continue his career could be a return to the team from Enstone. McLaren has not yet commented on the situation around Piastri and Ricciardo.
