Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alpine driver Esteban Ocon completed a lap on a simulator in a virtual version of the Hungaroring, talking about the main features of the circuit, located just 25km from Budapest. Esteban associates his only victory in Formula 1 with her joyful memories – on 1 August 2021, he managed to win a race that took place in changeable weather conditions.
Esteban Ocon: “Today we are driving with me on the Hungarian Grand Prix circuit – for me it is a special circuit. Let’s go around and see what we can come up with.
We start at the end of the third sector, and here it is important to take the last corner of the lap well, and for this we start accelerating early, as there is a long start-finish straight, and there we use DRS.
This is the longest straight line of the circuit, at the end there is an area where overtaking is possible. Before the 1st corner we brake at the very white line that delimits the border of the circuit, and in 3rd gear we go through this sharp corner. Then it is wise to activate DRS as soon as possible, but this must be done at the right moment to prevent the drive wheels from spinning.
Turn 2 is very interesting because the track is downhill, which can cause serious understeer. For turn 3 you don’t have to prepare too much, because here the track only goes a little bit to the right, and then we try to accelerate as best as possible on the left side.
We approach the 4th, the fastest corner of the circle, change down a gear, use the right curb and in the 5th corner we have to act more carefully not to go off the track.
Then we brake about 50 meters before the chicane (turns 6 and 7), first right, then left, staying on the curb and not braking too hard for turn 8, after which we try to get out of turn 9 better.
Then it is important to prepare ourselves as best as possible for the next section, we go through the fast turn 11, then we brake before the 12th in the area of the bump on the road, in which we drive a little bit on the curb, first from the inside of the track, then to the left…
At turn 13, the tires are already very hot, so you have to make a serious effort to prevent the rear wheels from falling off the track, also at the entrance to the last corner of the circle. Then we wait until the car turns and passes the apex, then we accelerate, use the kerb to the max and activate DRS. So we drove a lap around the Budapest circuit!”
