Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard believes the move to new regulations in the 2026 season could seriously change the face of racing…
David Coulthard: “When I was a racing driver years ago, I was asked what I thought about technical regulations. And I said I don’t think anything: my job is to race and let Adrian Newey and other engineers think about the rules.
At the same time, I was very interested in sports regulations. I thought about how I could use them to my advantage, what scenarios would give me an advantage. I would focus on areas where I could have an influence.
I have concerns about the new regulations that I believe are shared by engineers and racers. If we increase the role of combustion engines, it will change the face of racing.
Usually you reach maximum speed at the end of the straight and then brake as you enter the corner. The danger is that with the new regulations cars reach maximum speed earlier and then start to slow down towards the braking zone, and this is a very different race.
If cars slow down in braking zones, drivers will brake much later. Braking becomes shorter, which severely limits overtaking opportunities. The general principle will remain the same: the best drivers with the best cars will win, but the perception of racing will change.”
