James Vowles has once again commented on the situation surrounding Carlos Sainz. The Williams team boss made it clear that he was only prepared to sign a contract with the Spaniard if Carlos considers the partnership with Williams as a multi-year project, and not just looking for a place for a season and then trying to move to a more successful team.
James Vowles: “I think we are very open and honest about who we want to sign, but that doesn’t mean the contract will be signed. We know where the team is, but I want to get a driver who wants to be part of our project, understands the past and present of Williams and wants to take the team to the top. Sometimes a driver has different priorities, but I think it is important that his priorities align with ours.
We don’t want to be a team that is seen as a temporary stepping stone to the next step. I once left Mercedes to sign a contract with Williams. I didn’t do it because I was tired of winning, but because I wanted to leave my legacy, the legacy of thousands of people working as a team.
Alex Albon has also joined us because he shares our objectives. It is important for me and it is important for him and it should be a fundamental factor in the decision to join the team.
I understand Carlos. To some extent he dreamed of driving for Ferrari, driving for a leading team, but this is not happening and he needs time to adapt to the new situation. We have a concrete proposal, and if it suits him, we are ready.
If the rider is not satisfied with our offer, that is not a problem, we will find another way to achieve our goals.”
