Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes that if we switch to the 2026 regulations now, the cars will be slower, but the difference will no longer be noticeable.
Toto Wolff: “If we apply the 2026 regulations to today’s cars in a simulator, they will be too slow. Sometimes the difference is 10 seconds per lap. But the engineers of the Formula 1 teams are very inventive and even under the new regulations they will find a chance to make the cars fast.
TV viewers don’t notice it at all. IndyCar cars look fast, but they are 20 seconds slower than ours.
Maybe changing the ratio of electrical to thermal energy could reduce some of the problems. Now it is 50/50, but we will use biofuel, which will allow us to change the ratio while maintaining the same environmental friendliness. Unfortunately, we have missed this opportunity.”
