In 2022 the minimum car weight was increased to 798 kg, yet many cars are much heavier than this figure. In an effort to keep weight down, the teams do a variety of tricks, including using unpainted parts. Unpainted body panels are particularly noticeable in Imola on Williams cars.
McLaren boss Andreas Seidl confirmed that the team had to make a lot of compromises to save weight, but not at the expense of reliability: “Weight reduction is a difficult task for many teams, including us. We strive to keep the weight of the machine to a minimum as quickly as possible.
When preparing new products, we have to consider many factors, including budgetary constraints and machine reliability. We have to solve difficult problems.”
Aston Martin boss Mike Krak added that weight is one of the main differences between cars this year.
“The reasons why some teams are showing speed this year and others are not are the aerodynamics and the weight of the car,” says Krak. “We have made progress by reducing the weight, but we still have problems with the aerodynamics. We are prioritizing this issue.”
