Leclerc: We’re returning to the previous level

Charles Leclerc hopes his decision to use ‘extreme’ settings in recent laps has helped Ferrari get rid of the car’s wobble…

Charles Leclerc: “We made very rapid progress up to Monaco. I have said more than once that we have probably made the most progress since Monza last year.

Then we went to Montreal, where during the race there were problems with the power unit, which cost us a good result, but the turning point was the stage in Barcelona, where we seriously modified the car, when suddenly the swing appeared.

I made some pretty extreme adjustments to find a way around these problems, and I paid the price with the results, but we learned a lot. I am sure this experience in Hungary will help. It was important to spend as few races as possible on solving these problems, but we solved a lot. I hope that in Hungary and Spa we will return to our previous level and earn a lot of points, just like in the remaining races of the season.

What pants are we going to use this weekend? I won’t go into details, you’ll see tomorrow. We did our homework well. As I said, I took extreme measures in the settings during the last races. I think we learned a lot, and thanks to the rest week between races we were able to draw conclusions and make decisions for this weekend.

The Hungaroring is not a course where the swing is particularly noticeable, but we have something to compare it to. We will understand if we made the right decision, and the weekend in Spa will be a much more serious test.

So far I have no idea what the balance of power will be this week. Every weekend the top two or three teams are separated by two to three tenths. But if we optimize everything, there is no reason that can prevent us from returning to the level of the beginning of the year.

The most important thing is to have a clean weekend, without pushing the settings to the limit, so that I understand exactly how the car will behave in qualifying. If everything works out on Saturday, we can fight for the lead on Sunday.”
