In the final stage at Silverstone, the Aston Martin team earned points with two cars for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso discussed whether Aston Martin could build on this success in Hungary on Thursday and concluded that it would not be easy.
Fernando Alonso: “At the moment we are having problems finding the right settings for the car, which is preventing us from getting the most out of it. For example, in Barcelona we made a mistake in the direction of our work from the beginning of the weekend and we could not recover. In Austria, because of the sprint, we only had one practice session, in which we again did not get the most out of the car.
At Silverstone, the weekend followed a more usual schedule. In addition, the weather turned out to be cooler, which also helped our speed a bit. The weather is expected to be warm in Hungary and the cornering characteristics are similar to those of Barcelona, so we are facing a difficult weekend.”
Fernando summarised the first half of the season: “The season is difficult, because there are ups and downs. We started the year quite strongly and looked quite competitive in the first four or five rounds, especially in qualifying. We were close to Mercedes and even McLaren, but in the races we fell back.
The last four or five weekends have been more difficult, so we are waiting for improvement and return to more comfortable positions.”
