The Hungarian Grand Prix is always accompanied by warm weather, this time at the start of the first training session the asphalt had warmed up to 60 degrees under a cloudless sky!
There was a temporary replacement in Haas F1 – Oliver Berman was behind the wheel of Nico Hulkenberg’s car, the German watching the young driver work in the air-conditioned pits.
Several teams brought new products. The biggest were for Red Bull – the championship team trying to regain the elusive leadership. Ferrari brought a new floorpan to eliminate the rocking of the car. Aston Martin only installed new items on Alonso’s car so that engineers could compare.
Piastri’s car had problems with the hydraulics before the start of the practice, but the mechanics quickly found the leak and he drove out on track. Magnussen’s brakes overheated, Stroll complained about the handling, Ricciardo complained about the instability of the rear axle.
A virtual safety car was called out in the 31st minute to remove carbon residue from Albon’s car after he attacked the kerb at Turn 11.
The riders worked with different rubber compounds, but on hot asphalt the Soft tires did not allow them to complete two fast laps in a row, so they quickly lost their efficiency.
Carlos Sainz set the fastest time, lapped in 1:18.713. There are twelve racers within a second of him.
