After eight rounds of the Formula 2 season, the battle for leadership in the individual championship remains extremely intense, increasing the value of each point earned, and in the youth series bonus points are awarded for winning qualifying. In addition, starting from the most favorable position at the Hungaroring gives the maximum chance of success, as overtaking on a narrow, winding circuit is not much easier than in Monaco.
Before the start of qualifying, even the favourites admitted that it would not be easy to fight for pole, especially due to the characteristics of the circuit, which requires refined driving techniques. In particular, Gabriel Bortoleto, who is in fourth place in the personal classification, spoke about this, and he was the first to show a more or less representative time, doing a lap in 1:30.269.
Some of the problems during the session were related to traffic. At times the track was really busy and it was difficult to set a good time without interference. Indignant cries from various racers could be heard on the radio every now and then, complaining that someone had disturbed them. However, the stewards never punished anyone, so the violations were not malicious.
In the 10th minute of qualifying, yellow flags appeared, which then changed to red due to the departure of Campos driver Jose “Pepe” Marti. At the entrance to turn 11, he made a mistake under braking, locked up the brakes, spun the car, ended up on the side of the road and stopped. However, replays showed that the Spaniard’s car lost stability in the previous corner, when he went too far up the kerb. It looked like he had managed to keep it under control, but then something went wrong.
All drivers returned to the pit lane and were given new tyres, as it was already clear that the soft tyres would only last one attempt in qualifying mode and in the heat.
By then, championship leader Isaac Hadjar had managed to post the fifth fastest time, and Paul Aron, his closest pursuer, was on the seventh line of the protocol.
When the session resumed, Enzo Fittipaldi was the first to improve Bortoleto’s result, but he was soon overtaken by Aron, who completed another attempt with an excellent time of 1:30.028. Hadjar tried to cover this time, but only managed third, losing almost two tenths to the Stonian.
Other riders tried too, but none were able to achieve Aron’s result. Moreover, although there was still some time left until the end of the session, many started to return to the pits, realizing that it would still not be possible to do a lap faster than Paul.
This is how qualifying ended: Aron won his second pole of the season, which earned him a few extra points, and in the main race of the weekend he will start from the first position, with Enzo Fittipaldi’s Dallara next to his car.
But this is on Sunday, and in the Saturday sprint, Richard Ferschor, a fairly experienced rider from the Trident team, will start from pole, who has not had any luck this season, and has not risen above 6th place so far, so he occupies only 19th place in the personal classification. Presumably, the Dutchman will try not to miss his chance in Hungary.
