Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra summarised the results of Friday’s practice at the Hungaroring…
Simone Berra: “As expected, it was a very hot day, but nothing surprising happened on track. All three compounds performed as expected from the simulations, with C3 and C4 looking the most suitable for a race where thermal degradation will be a key factor. The C5 has an advantage on a hot lap, beating the C4 by around 6-7 tenths, but requires careful control from the driver to reach its full potential.
In the first practice, the track conditions improved rapidly. The drop in asphalt temperature resulted in a noticeable reduction in lap times and affected the balance of the car, with the front tyres deteriorating more quickly than in the first session.
When analysing long series times, it is important to take into account that drivers and teams had different approaches to tyre management. Some preferred to start the series cautiously and add at the end, others attacked from the very beginning to understand what the level of degradation could be in more extreme conditions.
