Horner: We’re doing everything we can to help Perez

The Red Bull Racing drivers finished Friday’s practice sessions at the Hungaroring in the top five – Max Verstappen showed a 2nd time, Sergio Perez – 4th. After the free practice, Christian Horner, the team principal, commented on the results of the first day of the Hungarian weekend.

Christian Horner: “I think these results on Friday can be called positive. I would say it was probably Sergio’s best Friday since the Chinese Grand Prix.

Some teams’ cars perform very well, and the difference between them is very small. Both our RB20s had technical innovations, but Perez’s car did not have the improved sidepods and bonnet. The underbody, the front fender and everything else is the same, and we have gathered very valuable information.

As the difference in the results of our two riders has clearly become smaller, we hope that this will give Sergio confidence. It is just that our car has very sharp reactions, and as we can see, Max can handle this better. But let’s hope that the version of the car that we prepared this weekend has more comfortable settings.

We all want Sergio to return to the form he showed in the first four or five races of the season. We are confident that he can do that, so the decision to extend his contract was taken quite early. We were just trying to create circumstances in which it would be easier for him to regain his peace of mind.

It hasn’t been all good lately, but let’s hope that today we’ve seen some signs that this period is behind us. The team is doing everything they can to help him, because we really need him to get back to his old form.

We have a completely sincere relationship with him and during our conversation, which took place in my kitchen, I asked: “What is going on? Maybe there is another reason?” He replied that he was simply too serious about soul searching.

I think it will benefit him if he practically doesn’t pay attention to what happens in the second half of the Red Bull garage, and now Sergio is trying to follow exactly this approach. He has to focus only on his own results.”
