Valtteri Bottas: We have a chance to finish in the top ten

Valtteri Bottas came close to reaching the final qualifying stage in Hungary, but missed out by less than a tenth. As a result, the Finn qualified twelfth and expects to fight for points in the race.

His Sauber teammate Guanyu Zhou finished the fight in the first part and set the eighteenth fastest time.

Valtteri Bottas (12th): “After the last lap of the second part of the qualification I felt like I could have gone faster and that is not always a nice feeling. I was very close to the final but I didn’t make it, which is disappointing, but for our team twelfth place is a normal result.

It’s good to see that we’re on the right track, it’s safe to say that the team has made some progress since the previous stage.

I think we have a chance to finish in the top ten. My starting position allows me to count on points, although it is difficult to overtake on this circuit. There should be no problems defending the position, but I hope we can attack. Let’s see what we can do with strategy.”

Guanyu Zhou (18th): “In qualifying we encountered some difficulties because the weather conditions were different from the previous session.

My last lap on the drying track was clean, but I had problems with my balance and the car being reluctant to take corners. Because of this I didn’t reach the second part with a little delay. I think I had a chance to continue.

Overall, the car has improved and we have made progress, taking into account the development direction chosen by the team and the new features installed on Valtteri’s car.

Tomorrow is a new day – in the race it will be crucial to keep the tyres within reach and to gain a few positions. I am sure the team will continue to attack and work hard to find the best way to achieve this.”
