At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari brought a new underbody to the car and hoped to return to the fight for first place. However, in qualifying, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc showed the fourth and sixth times and after the session they stated that the SF-24 did not have enough speed to compete with McLaren and Red Bull Racing.
Carlos Sainz (4th): “I think my round in the qualifying final today was the maximum we could hope for. In terms of starting position, we achieved our goal.
“Overall I am happy with how the weekend is going. In all the practices and all three qualifying sessions I was able to do good laps, but unfortunately fourth place is our maximum for today. McLaren and Red Bull are a few tenths per lap faster than us.”
Charles Leclerc (6th): “Difficult qualifying. In the first session the weather was not at all what we expected, but after that everything was quite easy.
The problem is that the car simply doesn’t have enough speed. We are third or fourth in speed – our pace is similar to Mercedes. I don’t know how we will look in the long series of laps, but unfortunately McLaren and Red Bull are far ahead now.”
