Nikola Tsolov won the Formula 3 race in Hungary on Sunday. Together with him, Laurens van Heupen and Noel Leon climbed to the podium.
Sunday morning the weather above the track was cloudy but dry. As for Saturday’s sprint, an extra warm-up lap was given before the main Formula 3 race because Tim Tramnitz could not take up a correct position at the start. As a result, Tramnitz started the race from the pit lane and the distance was reduced to twenty-three laps.
Pole holder Laurens van Heupen lost the lead in the first corner and passed Tsolov. Noel Leon started well, ahead of Leonardo Fornaroli in the battle for third place. Nikita Bedrin and Dino Beganovich each regained several positions and moved up to eighth and ninth place.
Joseph Loach and Sami Megetunif dropped to the back of the pack with punctures. Charlie Wurtz returned to the pits with the damaged car and retired.
In the opening laps, the top ten drivers traded best laps, but without overtaking. On the ninth lap, Van Heupen indicated an attempt to attack Tsolov in the first corner, but without active action. The leaders continued to drive one after the other, waiting for their rivals’ tires to lose their efficiency.
On lap fourteen Oliver Goethe Beganovic attacked and moved up to ninth place. Behind him championship leader Gabriele Mini Tasanapol overtook Intrafuwasak for eleventh place. Three laps later Intrafuwasaka overtook Marie Boya, followed by Luke Browning.
On lap twenty-one, Mari Boya overtook Mini and moved up to eleventh place. Behind him, Matthias Zagazeta and Arvid Lindblad collided on the straight at turn four. The riders were not injured, but both got out and the safety car came out on track.
The safety car returned to the pit lane at the end of the final lap, forcing the drivers to drive through the final corner of the circuit and finish. The top eight, completed by Nikita Bedrin, finished the race in the same order as after the first lap.
Nikola Tsolov took his third win of the season and his first in Sunday’s race. Laurens van Heupen finished in the top three for the fourth time this season. Noel Leon reached the podium for the third time. The best lap was driven by Sami Megetunif, who finished twenty-sixth.
None of the top three – Mini, Browning, Lindblad – earned any points. Thanks to fourth place, Leonardo Fornaroli closed the gap to them.
The penultimate round of the Formula 3 season will take place from 26 to 28 July at the Belgian circuit of Spa.
