Oscar Piastri took his first victory in Formula 1, although it required team intervention, but the most important thing was that the McLaren drivers took the first two places.
Oscar Piastri (1st): “I have been dreaming of such a day since I was a child, because climbing to the top step of the Formula 1 podium is an incredible experience! Of course, everything got a bit complicated in the end, but at the beginning I was able to take the lead and occupy the most favourable position.
Thanks to the team for a beautiful car, for a beautiful job – driving for McLaren gives me a lot of joy! I simply don’t have enough words to thank her for giving me the chance to compete in Formula 1. To win with her 18 months after my debut is even hard to believe!
Now we don’t have a car, but a real beast, it’s fast in all conditions. I think we had the race completely under control today and it’s great that we were able to secure a winning double for the team. I’m incredibly happy for the whole team and I’m happy to have opened the scoring for victories.
Regarding the situation with Lando, it was obviously clear that the later we changed positions, the more nervous I would be. But the team acted very clearly, and I think they acted correctly. Still, I took the lead at the start.
Maybe my pace on the last part of the distance wasn’t as high as I would have liked, but at least I was running second, and this made it possible to undertake such a manoeuvre.
I hope there are many more victories ahead, although I still have a lot to work on, but I learn something with every race. And now I will try to enjoy this success to the fullest.”
Lando Norris (2nd): “An incredible day for the whole team, and honestly I think that’s the most important thing. I’m very happy because we’ve been working towards this for a long time. Today we won because we were faster than everyone else, we were way ahead of the rest and we succeeded in good style.
Oscar had a good start, even for me when we left, and then controlled the course of the race. I think he deserved this win today. The team asked me to skip it, I did it – that’s all.
McLaren is a great team with two good drivers. The end of the season is still far away, but today is our day! In Spa everything can be very different, but we will keep attacking and try to get new victories.”
