Stella: We are happy with how our riders performed

After the finish of the Hungarian Grand Prix, in which the McLaren drivers completed a winning double, team principal Andrea Stella stressed the significance of Lando Norris eventually responding to urgent requests and giving way to his team-mate.

Andrea Stella: “I think Will Joseph, Lando’s engineer, had to talk to him on the radio more than once, but this is the approach to racing that our team practices, and the drivers know that. All of us – the team, Lando and Oscar – are on an upward trajectory together, none of us can do it alone. This is exactly what we were talking about in the morning before the start of the race.

The riders need to be reminded of this and that is why we have such a meeting every Sunday. And today we are very happy with how our riders performed. For me this is the most important news of the day. Then we have the chance to discuss everything with Lando and Oscar, but the point is that we showed the first two results in qualifying and took the first two places in the race.

This is an incredible achievement and I want to thank the entire team for making this possible.

Obviously I don’t know any driver who, while leading, will be happy to hear that he will have to swap positions with his partner. This doesn’t happen, that’s the nature of racers. That’s why we have to have meetings before the start of each race. But it’s also true that if a driver wants to achieve high results in the championship – first of all I’m talking about Lando – he needs the help of a partner and the support of the team. I think we will continue in this way.”
