Helmut Marko: Max is not used to this

After the finish of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko gave a rather candid commentary to Austrian TV channel ORF, in which he admitted that Max Verstappen and the entire team were not used to such a fierce battle with rivals, which was on Sunday at the Hungaroring.

When Marco was asked if Red Bull Racing could make good use of the upcoming summer break, Hellmuth replied: “We urgently need this break. In the first three races we thought we would have exactly the same season as last year, but then suddenly there was a change.

Max is not used to this, and we are not used to fighting so hard with our opponents. Of course the fans and the press love these kind of fights, but we have to endure it, but in the end we have to face the situation.

“We are still leading the individual championship and the constructors’ championship. There are still many races to go, so there is no point in pretending that all is lost. But we can no longer afford to make even the smallest mistakes.”

Max Verstappen took part in a virtual race on Saturday night and finished his shift at 03:18 local time. When Marco was asked if going to bed so late could have had an effect on Max’s condition and mood on race day, he replied: “I don’t remember what time Max went to bed in Imola, I think it was even later, but still won the race. Max has a very different daily routine – not the same as me or normal people.

There is nothing special about him going to bed so late. The important thing is that he has slept the required number of hours, and nothing else matters.
