The Ferrari team scored twenty points in Hungary thanks to Charles Leclerc’s fourth place and Carlos Sainz’s sixth place. The Scuderia dropped to third place in the Constructors’ Championship, behind McLaren, but the team was quite happy with the results of the race at the Hungaroring.
Charles Leclerc (4th): “Today we turned the situation in our favour. I ran the race confidently, controlled the tyre wear and showed a good pace. Fourth place is not the result we want, but the team knows there is still a lot of work to do, but we were in better shape than we expected.
“It’s a difficult circuit to overtake and you had to take precautions to avoid overheating while behind Lewis Hamilton in the final stint, which wasn’t easy. We took every opportunity today. It’s great to get these points for the team.”
Carlos Sainz (6th): “It’s a difficult race for me. The start wasn’t very good, and in Hungary it’s crucial. A bad start affected the first two stints and I had to overtake other cars to get to sixth place and then I was alone.
I could have attacked harder in the last stint, but overall we saw on Saturday that the car was not fast enough compared to the competitors who were ahead this weekend.
“It’s a very different circuit in Belgium and we have to think about what approach we need to take to finish the first half of the season with a good result for the team.”
Frederik VasseurTeam boss: “First of all, we would like to congratulate McLaren on a fantastic weekend, which was an excellent advert for the whole of Formula 1.
We had a good fight with Mercedes and Red Bull and got the most out of the car we had this weekend. The handling has improved, but now we need to increase the speed to close the two to three tenths gap to the McLaren.
Charles started well and gained several places. We had a very good pace in the second stint on the Hard tyres, while towards the finish it was more difficult on the Medium tyres. Charles tried to cut Verstappen, but Hamilton stopped in the pits at the same time and we were blocked behind Lewis.
Carlos didn’t start in the best way and then rode almost the entire race alone, but achieved the best result under such conditions.
“If you look at the number of points earned, we are second to McLaren. Of course we can’t be happy with it, but I think we are back on track.”
