Max Verstappen criticized the team and Hamilton

During the race in Hungary, Max Verstappen had a fight with his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase about the strategy, because he believed it was wrong. After the finish, the Red Bull Racing driver continued to criticize the team. Max and Lewis Hamilton got it before the collision in the first corner.

Sergio Perez’s race was not so rosy, but the Mexican managed to finish seventh and earn points after starting from sixteenth place.

Max Verstappen (5th): “Of course I am unhappy. Today we lacked speed compared to McLaren, we remained hopeful and hoped to do something through strategy, but today that is not the case.

First of all, they made a “cutback” on us. Not really nice, but okay. We tried to extend the segment, but my pace wasn’t very high. On the Hard tyres I tried to close the gap, but I was stuck behind Lewis for a long time. I lost a lot of time. My pace on those tyres wasn’t great, but it was good, but I couldn’t take advantage of it because I was stuck.

Then the team let me back out on track and after the pit stop I was in a traffic jam from the roundabout. On a day when your car is not the fastest you have to try to compensate for that with strategy. But if you drive behind the lap circles your tyres overheat, especially in this heat. Last year, when the car was much faster, we could afford to do things like that, but not now.

A difficult race, but I could have done better. I remain realistic and understand that we could not stay ahead of McLaren, but third place was possible if we did everything right.

I was overtaking when Lewis started to move under braking. I just locked the wheels because he turned to the right. People were talking a lot about what happened in Austria, saying I did the wrong thing and so on, but then I slowed down on the straight.

Today Lewis started to spin under braking, but that is not the way to do it. That is why I locked the wheels. Otherwise we would have collided when he turned towards me. If we had followed a better strategy, I would not be in this position and none of this would have happened.

Radio talks? What do I have to apologize for? I don’t think an apology is necessary, we just have to do a better job. I don’t know why people think I can’t be angry on the radio. This is a sport! If someone doesn’t like it, let them stay home.”

Sergio Perez (7th): “I think this is the maximum for today. In the first stint it was almost impossible to overtake on Hard tyres. We stuck to an aggressive strategy and decided to start with Hard, and it worked well.

The team restored my car overnight and although it wasn’t exactly 100% the same set-up, it was still positive that I got a feel for the car and was able to bounce back, which gives confidence. The team did a great job getting the car back on track after the accident and I had to do my best to match their level.

The only thing that matters to me is my team and the people who work with me. I had to do my best because they deserved it. I have to keep working to get in shape.

I think we showed today that the car has the speed to fight forward, and now it’s just a matter of time before we’re back on the podium.”
