Leo Turini on the events of the Hungarian Grand Prix

Authoritative Italian journalist Leo Turini, who traditionally comments on the weekend’s results through the prism of Ferrari’s performance, summarised the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Leo Turini: “I say right away that I would behave like Andrea Stella.

You may not like these words. Norris was ahead, but not by his own strength. In Austria 2002, Barrichello deservedly beat Schumacher.

Of course, I fully respect those who have opposing opinions.

Ferrari didn’t appeal to me (to say the least). In Hungary they performed poorly, but McLaren won the winning double, ahead of the Scuderia in the constructors’ championship.

I admire Kimi Antonelli. I don’t know if this Bolognese teenager will actually replace Hamilton at Mercedes, but he is starting to prove those who predict a bright future for him right. On Sunday in Budapest he won the Formula 2 race in a magnificent comeback. He was the only Italian who gave us a smile this weekend.

When I return to Formula 1, I find it hard to share the satisfaction expressed by Fred Vasser at the end of the race. Now Leclerc and Sainz McLaren can only see through binoculars. And Hamilton drove confidently ahead in a Mercedes (Russell in the other Silver Arrow fell behind after the troubles of Saturday).

It feels like the car is not moving forward. You can discuss strategies, but there is no way around it: in a championship where 7 different drivers have climbed to the top step of the podium (which hasn’t happened since 2012!), the Scuderia is only playing a supporting role.

And two more points.

McLaren, as I said at the beginning, provided Piastri with the triumph, which would have been ahead of Norris if there had not been a pit stop error. And here we can even be indignant about the philosophy of the Italian Andrea Stella, the boss of A Clockwork Orange, but we remember the testament of Enzo Ferrari that the interests of the team always come before the interests of the driver. However, if Norris does not have these seven points in the fight for the championship title, we will look at it differently.

And finally Verstappen. Judging by his behavior, based on the words he says to his engineers live on TV, I am inclined to think that he has already signed a contract with Mercedes for 2025!

The Dutchman’s hysteria (see also the incident with Hamilton) can only be explained by the fact that his car was no longer invincible. Internal quarrels at Red Bull, starting with the Horner affair and ending with the dismissal of Newey, set in motion a mechanism of self-destruction.

And it is a real shame that Ferrari is not taking part in the battle, which has once again become spectacular thanks to the renewed technological balance.
