Helmut Marko warned Perez: the contract will not help

On Thursday in Hungary, Sergio Perez answered questions from journalists and commented on rumours that he could be fired from Red Bull Racing after the Belgian Grand Prix if his results do not meet certain indicators.

The Mexican driver said he only recently extended his contract with the championship-winning team, so the issue is no longer relevant to him. However, in a new interview with Kleine Zeitung, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko noted that the two remaining races before the summer break in Hungary and Belgium are “critical” for Perez’s future with the team.

Helmut Marko: “It is clear that the results he showed in the last races are not enough. Let’s see if he can get back to his form. The contract does not help if the results are not satisfactory. Every contract in Formula 1 has a performance clause.

“Sergio’s inferiority to his teammate is a cause for concern among the team members. Their bonus payments at the end of the season depend on the team’s performance in the Constructors’ Championship, so for them this is the most important thing.”

When asked who could replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull Racing for the first round after the summer break at Zandvoort, Marco said: “I assume that we will first choose from our drivers. We have three juniors ready for Formula 1.

Liam Lawson is definitely a priority in this case. We also have Ayumu Iwasa and Isaac Hajar.”
