Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo said the Spa circuit no longer evokes the same fear, although it is really good in the rain…
Daniel Ricciardo: “We’ve all performed at Spa many times. Now Eau Rouge is not as impressive as the first time, and it’s quite easy to walk on dry asphalt. But at Spa it rains 50% of the time, and in wet weather Eau Rouge is a really scary turn. So yeah, it depends on the weather.
Previously there were three or four difficult places in Spa, now there are two. But I understand why the organizers changed the configuration: there have been several terrible accidents in Eau Rouge/Radillon. It is an iconic corner, but do we want it to remain extremely dangerous and have the feeling that something can happen every Sunday when the race takes place? No. Those times are over.
Eau Rouge still has its own character. It’s still challenging, and when you slipstream behind another car and lose downforce, it’s not scary anymore, it’s fun.
I think the organisers of the stage, which often takes place under changing circumstances, are doing everything right.”
