As Formula 1 weekends progress, Max Verstappen occasionally takes part in virtual races, but as long as he won on a real circuit, there were no questions asked.
In Hungary, Verstappen raced until 3.18am the night before the start of the Grand Prix, leading to speculation that both the criticism of the team during the race and the incident with Hamilton were due to his fatigue.
After the race, in which he finished fifth, Verstappen told critics to “fuck off”. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko Marko hinted that Verstappen would be banned from racing simulators during future race weekends, but the driver denied this.
Max Verstappen: “Yes, I have raced until three in the morning, this happens to me too, but virtual racing plays a very important role in my life.
We talked about it with the team and I said, “You don’t have to worry, there won’t be any other races.” But it’s not like I was forbidden to do it or anything like that. I don’t want them to count how they spend their free time and what they do on the weekends.
“I’ve won three world championships and I know very well what I can do and what I can’t do. I’m always very strict with myself about what’s allowed, given all my experience in Formula 1.”
