Lewis Hamilton: Max did not behave like a champion

The stewards of the Hungarian Grand Prix have not penalized Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen for a collision in the first corner of the 63rd lap. At the same time, the stewards indicated in their decision that the Mercedes driver “could have taken some action to avoid a collision.”

This formulation surprised Lewis Hamilton and on Thursday at Spa he said he disagreed with it.

Lewis Hamilton: “I was very surprised by their decision. I’m actually quite relaxed about the whole situation. I said it was a racing incident and left it in the past.

However, we have to keep in mind that in that episode, one driver was driving the car, and the second driver did not always have full control of the car. And if you watch the replay of the episode, you will see that I was far from completing the maneuver.

I was far from the apex of the corner, I took it to the left and left a lot of space on my right, so yes, this judgement from the stewards surprised me a lot.

Max and I haven’t spoken since the incident. We went to the stewards and that was it. I don’t know if we’ll talk to him about it. Maybe we’ll talk this weekend at the pilot parade. I don’t need it, but maybe Max wants to say something. But we haven’t had time to talk yet.”

In response to Max’s radio conversations with his race engineer during the race in Hungary and criticism of the team, Lewis gave the Red Bull Racing driver this advice: “You have to be a team leader, be part of the team. The racer is not just a leader, he is much more than a leader. Your teammates are a lot of collaborators and you have to behave like a champion.”

When Hamilton was asked what it meant to “behave like a champion,” Lewis replied with a laugh: “Good question! Do something different than last weekend.”
