On Thursday at Spa, Fernando Alonso summarised the first half of the season for Aston Martin and promised that the team will continue to work on closing the gap to the leaders.
Fernando Alonso: “This season the team is changing with ups and downs. At the beginning of the year we were quite fast, especially on Saturdays, but then problems arose in the races. Now we have managed to achieve more stability – the results on Saturdays and Sundays are about the same, but we are inferior to the four leading teams. This makes it more difficult because we want to fight for the top five places at the finish and for the podiums.
It is necessary to improve, especially on the race distance. I think we can achieve more by improving the aerodynamics. Everyone in the team is working with full dedication to prepare updates, so let’s see what results we can achieve in the second half of the season.
The team is confident in its capabilities. Every weekend we see that we are not losing much to our rivals. Three or four tenths of a second is a huge difference in Formula 1, but we see the example of McLaren last year and the example of this year with Mercedes, who started at the same level as us but were able to fight back.
One magical update and suddenly the car comes ‘alive’ and you can gain back those three or four tenths. We will not stop until we reach our goal.”
