Paul Aron set the fastest time during Formula 2 qualifying at Spa. Gabriel Bortoleto will share the front row with the Hitech driver at the start of Sunday’s race.
The riders did not sit back in the pits and immediately went out on track as soon as the stopwatch started counting down the 30-minute session. Some of them managed to start the first fast lap when first the yellow and then the red flags appeared in the second and third sectors.
The reason was Victor Martin, who drove slowly along the highway and then stopped completely due to technical problems with the car. Everyone had to go back to the pits and for the ART driver the qualifying ended there.
The break lasted a little over five minutes, after which the riders returned to the track. This time I managed to make my first fast attempt. Paul Aron led the protocol for a while, but Isaac Hadjar completed the lap a tenth faster. Gabriel Bortoleto showed the third fastest time, Kimi Antonelli the fourth.
After the tyres had cooled, Aron attempted another fast lap, but was unable to improve and, following his rivals, headed to the pits for new tyres.
Ten minutes before the end of qualifying, the riders started to return to the track. Dennis Hauger was the first to beat Hajar’s time; Maloney, Crawford and Aron, who were at the top of the protocol, completed their attempts even faster.
Isaac Hajjar improved his time and moved up to second place. However, Bortoleto finished his lap next and pushed Isaac to third position. After the attempt, a disgruntled Hadjar radioed the team that his engine’s safe mode had been activated three times during the fast lap.
Paul Aron will start from pole for the third time this season. Under the reverse grid rule, Zach O’Sullivan will start Saturday’s sprint from pole, with Dennis Hauger in second place.
The results are being prepared
