F3: Callum Voisin starts from pole in Spa

Callum Voisin set the fastest time during Formula 3 qualifying at Spa. For the British driver this was the first pole in his career. Alex Dunne will start next to him from the front row during Sunday’s race.

Before the penultimate stage of the season, there was a change at the ART team – instead of Nikola Tsolov, Ferrari Racing Academy participant Tuuka Taponen, who will make his debut in Formula 3, took over the wheel.

Qualifying began in overcast conditions, with the forecast predicting a 30% chance of rain during the session, so the drivers rushed straight out onto the track. Some began attacking on the first flying lap, others preferred to do two warm-up laps.

Of those who attacked immediately, Luke Browning posted the best time: 2:06.465 s. However, after the rivals’ attempts had begun, Luke quickly rolled back past the top ten. Based on the results of the first attempt, Laurens van Heupen posted the best time. Christian Mansell and Nikita Bedrin completed the top three. Championship leader Gabriele Mini posted the sixth fastest time.

Luke Browning went first for the second attempt 15 minutes before the end of the session. On a fast lap Luke made a mistake and went off the track, after which he turned into the pits.

Most of them returned to the track ten minutes before the end of the session. The riders again rode two warm-up laps, after which they started fast series, which were alternated with cool-down laps.

Noel Leon improved Van Heupen’s time by almost a second, but four riders led by Voisin completed their attempts even faster. In the end, no one could improve on Rodin’s time and he took pole position.

Championship leader Gabriele Mini qualified eleventh. Second-placed Luke Browning was seventh. Nikita Bedrin set the sixteenth fastest time.

The starting grid for the sprint is reversed: the drivers in the top twelve positions will start in reverse order tomorrow. Dino Beganovic will start from pole on Saturday. Gabriele Mini will start the race with him from the front row.
