Berra: The weekend will be demanding for the tyres

The new asphalt made the Spa circuit over a second faster, and also increased the load on the tires…

Simone BerraPirelli Chief Engineer: “This weekend will be particularly demanding on the tyres, which is to be expected on the unique Spa circuit. Thanks to the replacement of large areas of asphalt, grip has increased significantly, making the track much faster on the one hand – almost 1.4 seconds compared to pole two years ago, the last time there was a real reference point – and on the other hand, this has led to an increase in the granulation of medium and soft tyres, and as a result to greater wear over a long distance.

With rain expected on Saturday and dry on Sunday, the teams will have to rely on the data collected today for the race. Compared to what we have seen in the last two years, the C2 tyres on the new generation of cars are quite competitive and could be the optimal choice for the race. That is why the four teams have retained two sets for each of their drivers.”
