Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg had different assessments of the results of Friday’s practice sessions for the Belgian Grand Prix. Kevin is pleased with the car’s race pace, while his partner noted that there is still work to be done on the settings.
Kevin Magnussen (8th): “A pretty productive day. We evaluated different levels of downforce – it’s always difficult to choose the right one at Spa. The nature of the track means that different areas require different settings and the weather becomes another factor to consider as there is a risk of running on a wet track. But everyone is on an equal footing.
“On this circuit it’s not so important to start as high as possible, because overtaking is quite easy, but it does require a high race pace. We looked solid during the long laps in the second practice, so we’ll see.”
Nico Hulkenberg (16th): “In a way, Friday was difficult, because I wasn’t completely comfortable driving. In the evening, you have to analyse the data you have collected and find the settings that give the best balance between handling and speed.
We managed to figure out a few things today, so we’ll try to put everything together on Saturday and get the most out of the car.
The weather during qualifying and during the race can be different, so you have to make the right decision on the amount of downforce. It will be interesting.”
