Mercedes’ new products haven’t worked yet

Mercedes has brought a new aerodynamic bodykit to Spa, but so far the team has failed to improve on it…

Andreas ShovlinChief Engineer: “Today we have problems with the machine, we will work overnight to improve it tomorrow. We lose time over the whole speed range, not in individual corners, and over the long distance we also look insignificant. Both problems bring a lack of balance and grip.

“Our team is already working on the simulator in Brackley and investigating the installation possibilities. There is a possibility that we will see a wet track tomorrow. This may make it difficult to judge the changes from one day to the next, but we will see what we can learn and what Saturday brings.”

George Russell (6th): “It is always a pleasure to be here in Spa and to drive a Formula 1 race on this incredible circuit. With the new asphalt it became even faster.

At night we have to work to get to a higher speed. McLaren’s Red Bull and Max Verstappen were a step ahead today. You have to dive into the data and run the simulator in Brackley to get closer. I am confident we can do that.

The forecast for tomorrow is for rain, and that is another factor. We often had good Fridays and on Saturday our opponents overtook us. Hopefully we can overtake them this weekend.”

Lewis hamilton (10th): Not the best day. The first training didn’t go well, for the second we adjusted a few things and at first it improved the balance, but after the switch to Soft the problems became even bigger.

If it rains tomorrow, we’ll try to take advantage of it. We’ll see what Saturday brings.”
