Esteban Ocon only managed to complete one lap in the first practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix, after which he returned to the pits due to a leak in the cooling system. In the second part of the free practice, the Alpine driver completed 23 laps and set the seventh fastest time.
His partner Pierre Gasly completed both training sessions and finished second in fifteenth place in the protocol.
Esteban Ocon (7th): “It’s great to be back in Spa and racing on this amazing circuit. Unfortunately, there was a coolant leak this morning so I had to stop the session and hand the car over to the team to fix the problem.
In the second practice we were able to work according to our program and complete the required number of laps. The empty tank speed looks encouraging, but there is still some work to be done on the pace over the long series of laps, especially when it comes to controlling the tire wear.
The team has managed to gather a lot of information from two cars and now it is important to study everything and make the necessary adjustments to the settings before tomorrow’s sessions.”
Pierre Gasly (15th): “Every time I come to Spa, I have mixed emotions. This is a unique route. I love driving a Formula 1 car at Spa because it is one of my favourite circuits.
The team had several new products ready for this weekend, so it was important to work with them to understand their features. The first session went well, but the second had a few minor issues that probably hampered some of our speed.
The team gathered a lot of information for analysis. We made some comparisons between the two cars and are ready to get back on track tomorrow.”
