At the beginning of this year, Michael Andretti submitted an application to the FIA for his team to enter Formula 1 from 2024. No real progress has been made since then, leading to anger in the US team’s camp.
Commenting in Hungary on the situation surrounding Michael Andretti’s application, the head of Mercedes Toto Wolff said Formula 1 is much more interested in a works team from a major car manufacturer appearing in the championship than any other private team.
Toto Wolff: “In my opinion, whoever applies for the 11th team should show what he can do for our company. Andretti is a great name and they have achieved a lot in the US, but Formula 1 needs to understand what this project can bring to the sport.
When a car manufacturer or a big international company gets into Formula 1, it spends huge amounts on marketing to promote the sport in international markets. Obviously this is a very different value proposition for all the other teams.
All ten teams want to increase their value, but this will not happen if we simply allocate places in the championship to people who are unable to increase the overall value of Formula 1.
