Prema driver Dino Beganovic won the Formula 3 sprint on Saturday. Championship leader Gabriele Mini and Noel Leon climbed onto the podium with him.
Saturday morning the Formula 3 drivers were greeted with cloudy weather and a slightly damp track after an overnight rain, but everyone started on slicks.
Pole holder Beganovic didn’t start very confidently and in the first corner Gabriele Mini took the lead. Tim Tramnitz started the race well and overtook Santiago Ramos in the battle for third place.
Max Esterson lost control of the car at Eau Rouge, spun and was thrown into a barrier on the other side of the track. The driver left the cockpit under his own power and the safety car entered the track.
The restart took place on the fourth lap of twelve. In turn 5, Beganovic attacked Mini and led the pack. Noel Leon overtook Luke Browning in the battle for fifth place. On the following lap, Sebastian Montoya overtook Luke in turn 6.
On the sixth lap, Browning tried to overtake Sami Megetunif in turn 5 – they almost collided, both went off the track and Megetunif eventually moved up to seventh place.
Dino Beganovic tried to break away from the pack, but Mini didn’t let him go for more than nine-tenths of a second. On lap ten, Mini tried to attack Tramnitz himself, but the Prema driver managed to stay ahead.
On the final lap, Noel Leon overtook Tramnitz on the straight before Turn 5 in the battle for third place. In addition, Leon received an extra point for the best lap.
Dino Beganovich took the race to his second victory of the season, beating teammate Mini by 1.1 seconds at the finish. Gabriele extended his lead over Luke Browning in the individual competition thanks to his second place.
Browning actually finished seventh, but moved up to sixth in the final standings after five seconds were added to Megetunifa’s time for repeated infringements.
Leonardo Fornaroli’s eighth place allowed him to stay ahead of Arvid Lidblad in the battle for third place in the individual competition. Nikita Bedrin finished fourteenth.
