The rain did not help the Haas drivers to achieve more in qualifying at Spa – both crashed out of contention in the first session…
Nico Hulkenberg (16th): “Overall everything went almost optimally, there is no feeling that we did anything wrong. We simply did not have enough speed and grip on the intermediate tyres to go faster.
“This season we have repeatedly found that the car is not efficient enough on intermediate tyres. We need to find the reason. I don’t know if the others used higher downforce settings because of the rain, but if so, tomorrow could work in our favour.”
Kevin Magnussen (17th): “I don’t think we were too far from the optimum result. On the second attempt I did two laps when the track conditions improved. At that point, one lap on a fresh set could change the situation.
“In general, we were not as competitive in these conditions as we were yesterday on a dry track. We had planned to do the session on a wet track, but in the end it turned out to be almost dry and our plan did not work.”
